Rockville Science East Renovation December 2011

The contractor performing abatement work in the Science East building is behind schedule. Abatement work is not anticipated to be complete until January of 2012.

The College has awarded the general construction contract for the renovation process to the Whiting Turner Co, of Baltimore, MD. Whiting Turner is anticipated to be on-site January/February 2012 pending a notice to proceed from the College. As of mid-December 2011 there were still outstanding regulatory agency permiting issues preventing the College from issuing the "Notice to Proceed".

Rockville Science East Renovation February 2012

Whiting Turner (WT) has erected primeter fencing around the Science East Building creating a construction site. WT brought in the first of their mobile office trailers and located it within the construction site. Walk throughs of the construction site with WT personnel and College Facilities and IT staff produced a list of questions regarding items that were not specificly addressed in the construction drawings. Primarily these are movable items such as benches, tables, trash receptacles and a single pay telephone. The College is arranging for these items to be removed from the construction site.

Rockville Science East Renovation January 2012

IT has submitted proposed WiFi access point location drawings to Central Facilities and the architect for a future contract bulletin to the Science East contract.

A recommendation has been returned to IT and Central Facilities from the academic area recommending only a single "Bright Link" style project be installed in Science East classrooms. The remainder to the projectors will continue to be the College standard mounted in the center of the room.

This item has also been forwarded Central Facilities for inclusion in a future contract bulletin.

The abatement contractor has discovered additional asbestos to be abated surrounding 75 windows that need to be removed. This will add delay to them completing their work.

Whiting Turner anticipates initial installation of construction zone fencing limiting access around the Science East building starting late January 2012.

Rockville Science East Renovation 10/11/2011

The Science East building has been emptied of College inventory and the building turned over to remediation contractors for the remediation of asbestos prior to renovation work. It is anticipated that the remediation work will continue through the month of October and November 2011. The building should be turned over to the general contractor some time in December 2011 to begin demolotion and renovation work.

Central Facilities is preparing the first addendums to the renovation scope of work which will include some IT items related to projection screens, classroom projectors and possibly contract requirements.

Rockville Science East Renovation

All occupants of the Science East building have been moved to new locations either in the new Science Center or into Science West. Clean out of building has begun under the leadership of Central Facilities. The Science East building was offically closed to the general public on August 17, 2011. IT is in the process of removing that building infrastructure that will be re-used in other College locations. The tentative schedule for the building is;

  • Remediation of Asbestos September - November 2011

  • General Renovation December 2011 - December 2012

  • Re-Opening Spring/Summer 2013
