Program Verification kickoff meeting

Day 1 - March 23 ------ Day 2 - March 24

The new Science building along with Science East and West will be treated as a 3 building complex. In a code sense, the Science and Science East will be treated as one building.

Burt Hill has set up a collaboration site (password has been issued)

A building forensics engineer will cut holes in the walls during the next few weeks to see what condition the walls are in.

Timeline - starting now

  • Programming - 7 weeks (March 23 - May 8)
  • Schematic design - 15 weeks (May 11 - August 21)
  • Design development - 15 weeks (August 24 - December 4)
  • Construction documents - 36 weeks (December 7 - TBA)
  • Bidding - 10 weeks
  • Construction - 15 months
  • Open Spring 2012
Construction phases

  • Science - phase 1
  • Science East - phase 2
  • Science West - phase 3
Important note
West utilities are supposed to work while East is being renovated
need to think about the implications of the phasing
are current wiring paths affected?
how to support science from west while east is being renovated

Science East will butt up against Science, effectively sharing a joint wall.

Elevators
New in west - position to be determined
East elevator to be redone or repositioned

Room shapes
East and West have an underlying steel structure. The concrete block walls are not load bearing which will make it easier to do an entirely new layout. Rooms will need to fit some aspects of the current buildings where there are columns.

Looking to incorporate rooms to support many different learning styles. Plan to have lots of static display areas.

Strong LEED emphasis including a green roof.

Preliminary technology notes

  • Burt Hill A/V specialist has the current MC IT standards.
  • cell phones - some discussion about coverage (particularly in classrooms)
  • Wireless - general agreement that secure wireless connection to MC networks would allow greater flexibility in classrooms and labs.
  • Power for laptops - issue recognized, possible use of multiple floor outlets.
Office discussion

  • Faculty offices - want to have math faculty close to the science faculty.
  • Insufficient space in currently specified offices to fit 4 adjunct faculty
Math Labs discussion

In general wanted as much flexibility as possible in layout to allow for different and future teaching styles.

Math Labs technology quantities (preliminary)

  • 23 labs
  • Number of students (currently 28 but may increase because of generous room size)
  • Marker boards on three walls
  • Eliminated the tack board
  • Kept the motorized projection screen for the moment but some discussion about the use of electronic white boards. More info to come. Aspect ratio to be discussed.
  • SIWS
  • to include an Elmo
  • request to have the SIWS able to connect to both networks
  • should the SIWS network connection be wireless? (what about other connections such as to the projector?)
  • request for table to put teaching materials on while using SIWS
  • Voice / data outlets - one telephone - wireless
  • Eliminated the two-way A/V teleconference
  • Eliminated the TV (maybe still provide a cable)
  • LCD projector - see electronic white board discussion
  • Eliminated 3 printers - question whether wiring should still be installed or if wireless could be used if a printer is eventually requested
  • Coat storage - no change
  • Window shades - blackout request removed - blinds ok.
  • Carpet floor - probably tiles - will need holes for floor power outlets
  • Acoustical ceiling - no change
  • Prewired movable tables - wanted tables to be simple and movable, leaning towards use of laptops rather than PCs. - to investigate hide-away type workstations / laptops - quantity of tables to be discussed. Need to allow for extra space for DSS & ADA students (2 additional chairs per room)
  • Increased number of workstations / laptops from 10 per room to one per student.
  • Chairs - see tables discussion
  • Dimmable lighting - possibly use banked lighting

Math Science Center - Overview

Need different seating configurations with lots of power outlets for laptops

Need open computer labs, small group study areas (4 - 6 people) and larger study areas (24 - 30 people). Will need some form of reservations system for the rooms.

Center is spread over two floors so there may need to be two controlled entrances and possibly two tiers of staffing.

Possibility that one or more of the labs will be used for assessment & testing.

Possible that MS Center will also support some of the Computer Science program (physics & engineering)

List of what students would do in the MS Center

  • receive tutoring
  • use secured materials - books, calculators, microscopes, oscilloscopes etc
  • use open computer lab
  • self study (groups or individual)
  • meet with faculty
  • student & faculty training (software, tutor training, calculator, computer etc)
  • alarm system needed for electronic checkout of physical items
  • displays and messaging boards
  • secured bulliten boards (services, events, times open, jobs, parties)
  • wireless access to internet & secured network
  • club activities possible
  • printing (but with some controlling mechanism)

IT Issues

As the rooms were discussed, several IT general recommendations arose for the labs:

  • Electronic messaging board instead of the 8x4 tack board
  • Future discussion about using an electronic whiteboard instead of projection screen
  • Full SIWS (tier 2) with Elmo / Sympodium
  • Need for workspace or table next to SIWS for instructor to lay their material & and a seat
  • Switch controlling the motorized projection screen either part of the SIWS or close to the SIWS- switch to be clearly labelled
  • One phone (dial out to campus)
  • Allowing 2 ADA spaces with larger monitors
  • Power outlets for laptops - easy access to the power on the top of the desks
  • Desks to be fixed
  • Movable closed cabinets for printer supplies
  • Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) instead of carpet for general purpose classrooms and labs
  • Carpet for offices
  • Blackout not needed
  • Banked lighting instead of dimmable lighting
  • 2-way Teleconference A/V deleted except possibly for conference rooms

Math Science Room Review

Catalogue Kiosk removed

PC Lab - large

  • leaning towards option 1 of the configuration options
  • some discussion about being able to reconfigure option 1 as two rooms but many doubts expressed
  • 1 scanner
  • 2 printers
  • 58 + 2 (ADA) students (may increase to 64 total)

PC Lab - small

  • 1 scanner
  • 1 printer
  • 32 instead of 30 workstations
  • 840 NSF may increase
  • Micro / Oscilloscope Model
  • power for laptops
  • alarm on door to stop stuff going out
  • no phone requested

Individual Tutorial

  • Proposed room shape to be changed significantly
  • small form desktop PC
  • possibly monitor with an articulated arm
  • no printer
  • all PCs loaded with same software as labs

Service desk

  • 2 desktop PCs with monitor below the counter
  • 1 printer
  • 2 phones
  • Functions - check in / out, tutor scheduling

Staff Workstation

  • May use modular furniture - may go to an arrangement similar to banks where the workstation is out in an exposed are with little security and everything will need to be lockable
  • Tutor types (student peer, F/T faculty, Adjunct, staff)
  • 1 PC
  • 1 phone

Other rooms

There was insufficient time available to cover the other rooms. These will be examined at a future meeting (TBA).

OIT rooms / issues to be covered at a future meeting (see below)

Issues for Math and Math Science still to be discussed (bike racked)

  • Science East has 110 class sections which will need to be relocated in the phasing process
  • adequate power needed to all public spaces (students sit on floors so that they can plug in their laptops)
  • cell phone coverage discussion
  • need projection screen aspect ratios
  • three levels of computers (full, laptop, partial hideaway)
  • SIWS - all to have full capacity (see notes above)
  • Need MC Alert protocols / requirements as interpreted with "electronic messaging boards"
  • Need discussion about possible use of Digitized White Boards (Promethean boards used in MC public schools)
  • Need discussion about possible use of interactive pen displays Sympodium

Meeting with Burt Hill and OIT for all three buildings to occur towards the end of programming to discuss IT requirements.

(need to set this up to occur before May 6)
