Program verification for IT

Documents distributed
  • New Program Summary Draft
  • Classrooms (32 seat)
  • Classrooms (48 seat)
  • Lecture hall
  • Math lab (small & large)
  • Conference room (small & large)
  • MSC Group Study
The above documents should be available on the Burt Hill site.

SIWS
  • Explanation given about differences between tier 1 and tier 2
  • Tier 1 should be used for design development purposes
  • Standards being reviewed - should be ready by July
  • Faculty prefer to have stand alone DVD player separate from DVD in PC / laptop
  • Moving to 16x10 screens - can tailor lense to the room - standards to be passed on to Burt Hill
  • Eventually VHS will go away
  • Plan to use Sympodium instead of smart white board
  • Need to provide a cable connect (coax) to each location even if not connected
  • Need phone by each SIWS
  • Need screen up/down switch by the SIWS
  • Screen should be recessed in the ceiling
  • Screen should be in the center of the room or just off center
  • Remote pointers / advancers to be distributed to the faculty using the room
  • Standard for connections is thru the floor
  • Want station on the other side of the room from the door so that students who are late don't walk in front
  • Can be slightly angled
  • Document camera should be positioned on the side closest to the side wall
  • Speakers are ceiling mounted (70 volt ) with 6 per room
  • All equipment needs to be on the same electrical circuit (20 amp dedicated) to prevent ground loops
  • Projector standard is currently 720i
  • There was a question whether Sympodium will adjust for a 16x10 screen.

Data / voice /  cable television
  • Standards should be updated by July and should be reviewed every 14 months
  • Standard for horizontal cable TV is currently RG6 but may be replaced by fiber in the new set of standards
  • There should be a BDF / MDF for each building (200 sq ft)
  • There should be one or more IDFs for each floor (150 sq ft) depending on the positioning within the building that allows for the 295 foot maximum length of cabling.
  • Intelligent building cables should use cat-6 and may be terminated in the MDF/s IDFs. This does not apply to fire alrams.
  • There will be a loop going thru Science Science east and Science West.

Wireless

  • Intention is to provide unsecured wifi access to the internet and secured access via wifi to MC resources. This decision is still in committee.
  • Will need to provide power points in the floor for charging laptop batteries
  • Wireless Access Points will be POE and will be mounted in the plenum
  • A wireless study is not included in the contract with Burt Hill

Digital signage
  • This will depend on the programming needs of the building
  • Will mostly be installed in lobby areas, not in classrooms
  • Currently being looked at by a committee
  • Displays need to be positioned so that blind people do not walk into them (ADA)

Mobile carts / storage
  • Need to be provided to quickly replace a failed SIWS
  • These will need to cover the Science building as well as E/W - three storage spaces, one per building - could be combined for Science and Science East in a double sized room
  • Need 2 stations per building (6 total)
  • Storage requirements per building, 2 stations, (6' x 2') shelf space, shelving for 5 CPUs
  • Nothing special required for electrical
  • Should be network access and a phone
  • Technicians will work in the rooms but not require desk space
  • No other special devices that need a home
  • A/V recording - ITV truck - provisioning made to allow for connecting ITV cables to truck in Science. Similar provisioning should apply to East and West

Digital White Board
  • Will use Sympodium and project screen
  • Burt Hill will not provide demos of other possiblities
  • Education lab that currently uses a Promethian board will not be in East or West and will be relocated elsewhere

Emergency notification
  • standards being developed
  • BH will specify amber colored stobes and  LCD panels that are tied back to the fire alarm system
Clocks
  • Possibly atomic with a repeater within the buildings
  • To be decided by Facilities
Review by Program Area

  • Examples of how to plug in power and network cables at desktops were discussed.
  • Expect increased demand for power points  for recharging laptops and cellphones
  • Concerns expressed by faculty about durability of sockets.

Classrooms (32 and 48 seat versions) - see document at BH site
  • No fixed PCs in these rooms
  • Provide for laptops that students bring in or from a roll around cart
  • Telephone for all rooms (irrespective of whether there is a SIWS or not)
  • One power outlet per seat
  • SIWS is not a KI furnishing

Lecture Hall - see document at BH site
  • Probably reusing the hall in Science West
  • No digitized wall board
  • No TV
  • One LCD projector - lense size to fit room dimensions - line of sight issues - existing screen is too large
  • Could use a roll around whiteboard
  • Provide power for laptops at each seat
  • Need for Video Conferencing to be identified by Dean
  • Provide telephone near SIWS
  • SIWS to have movable head on document camera to allow for easy positioning over experiments
  • May need sound reinforcement
  • ADA hearing needs covered by Disability Services
  • May need to provide ability to record (auxiliary connectors on SIWS for video / audio)
  • Possible surround sound to show movies.

Conference rooms (small and large) - see document at BH site
  • No screen for small room - use 57" LCD
  • No SIWS for small room
  • Use companion cart with laptop locked on top in small room
  • Screen and SIWS for large room
  • Need for Video Conferencing to be identified by Dean for both rooms
  • Locations of rooms not yet determined
Math / Science PC labs - see document at BH site
  • 1 network printer per room
  • May have special PC hardwre requirements for Pro Engineering software
  • May need 2 SIWS if the long narrow version of the large lab (option 1) is used. Only need 1 SIWS if option 2 chosen.
MSC Group Areas
  • no discussion

MSC Special Areas
  • no discussion

Typical Administrative Areas
  • 1 PC and 1 printer per office - use standard office configuration for Science Center

OIT Areas
  • Need offices for network and Media resources staff
  • Server room should be adjacent to MDF (200 sq ft)
  • Staging and repair - lower level desirable (500 sq ft) - see student services programming
